Rave is Religion
Looking at the rave scene as a global culture, shows how a huge number of people can have a meaningful "religious" experience in a completely different cultural environment to the traditional religious institutions. I think this image really shows how such a huge group of people become a unity when they're in the same place for the same reason.
MDMA was the most popular drug of choice during the period of the 'Second Summer of Love' in the late 80's. LSD was also widely available and became popular again since the first 'Summer of Love' in the '70s.
Mark Moore, who own the club S'Express, commented on the importance of MDMA saying that "It definitely took ecstasy to change things. People would take their first ecstasy and it was almost as if they were born again."
Nick Holloway also stated that "The ecstasy and music came together. It was all part of the package...That may sound a little sad, but there's no way acid house would have taken off the way it did without ecstasy."
The smiley logo was symbolic of the period, it de-bossed in ecstasy pills and used on tickets and posters promoting acid house nights. I think it also stands for the lack of violence during the period, because of the effects of the drugs taken in the clubs people where too happy to be bothered about starting any fights.
